Where it all Began

Over the years Woodcrest Christian has had one purpose, “to glorify God in Christ-centered academics.” This vision began with a woman named, Matilda Randall. Mrs. Randall’s grandson was to start kindergarten in 1948, and she noticed that Christ and learning about the Lord was being removed from local schools at the time. Matilda felt God’s calling to start a Christian school in the city of Riverside. She and a few women spent a weekend at Forest Home Conference Center to pray and seek God’s will for starting this new school.

The first year of school began with seven students and was located in a small rented building in downtown Riverside off of Tenth street. Mrs. Randall and four other women began teaching and by the end of their first year the school had grown to 23 students. By 1949 they quickly outgrew the small building and were asked by the fire marshal to find somewhere bigger to gather. They found an old ceramics studio off of Sunnyside Dr., located near the Riverside Plaza. Four years later there were over 100 students, ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade.

What started as a passion of educating her grandson in a Christ-centered education, and simple obedience, Matilda cultivated into something that would go on to impact thousands of lives.

If there is anything to learn from Matilda, it is to simply say yes to the Lord, and watch His faithfulness.
