Committing to the Bigger Picture

WCS parent Joan Danfifer shares her story as a single parent determined to provide a Christ-centered education for her two children.

How many children do you have at WCS?

I am blessed that both of my children are ‘lifers’ (they attended Kindergarten through 12th grade) at Woodcrest Christian School: Jonathan (’18) and Erica (’19).

Why did you originally choose Woodcrest Christian for your children?

I first heard about Riverside Christian Day School (now Woodcrest Christian Day School) from a neighbor who also sent her kids there. At first, I liked the idea of an all-day kinderarten because it fit my work schedule at the time. But I also appreciated the Christian focus and the smaller school environment.

What has had the most impact on your family from attending WCS?

The stability that Woodcrest Christian provides stands out as having the most impact on my family. The academics have challenged my kids in positive ways. The mission program has also challenged them to grow spiritually and in character. It would be hard to list all the things that I love about WCS. Some other things that stand out are the small school environment, Christian focus, the other families, and having a staff and administration that truly care about my children. I have had many memorable interactions with the administrators, teachers, and coaches at Woodcrest. I always felt like they were walking alongside me in raising my children.

What would you say to other families considering sending their children to WCS?

To any parents who are considering sending their children to WCS, but specifically to single parents, don’t be quick to dismiss the idea of sending your kids to a private school. You will never regret the investment. When your life is changing around you, (when the world is changing around you), the one constant in their life, the one stability, will be their school.

The financial aspect is a challenge, but it is important to remain committed to the bigger picture. What my children needed most was stability, and to be in an environment where people really cared about them. My kids know that we may not have everything that we want right now, but we do have everything we need. The long-term benefits are worth it.

I can say without a doubt that my children and I would not be where we are today were it not for Woodcrest Christian.
