Band Student Earns Second Chair in SCSBOA
Congratulations to Emme Kim (Class of 2022) who earned second chair on the French Horn in the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association Honor Band! Students from all across Southern California compete for this honor, sending in auditions and spending hours upon hours practicing. Emme’s dedication to practicing and her love for music shows! Way to go, Emme!
Emme’s interest in music developed in band class in Middle School at Woodcrest Christian. Under the direction of WCS band director, Mr. Ken Rasner, Emme first started playing the French Horn in 7th grade, and she has been playing ever since.
“Music is something that comes from the heart, and that is a God-given gift.” –Emme Kim
“Mr. Rasner inspired her when the band came to visit Woodcrest Christian Day School when she was in elementary school there,” says Sally Kim, Emme’s mom. “She had no experience playing the French Horn when she joined Band in 7th grade, but Mr. Rasner and his staff have been amazing. They are a gift and a blessing,” she says.
Emme’s future plans include keeping music in her life. She currently belongs to the Claremont Young Musicians program. And while uncertain at this time of which college she’ll attend, Emme knows for sure that she wants to continue playing music and performing in some way. “I love the relationship with music,” she says, “and how you are able to put emotions to it.” Being in the community of band and performing as a group are some of the other things Emme loves about band. “I love how everyone comes together and how our practicing and hard work pay off when we perform,” she says.
